Homewood Historic Preservation Commission
Whether you're arriving from downtown Birmingham over Red Mountain, driving in from Vestavia Hills or Mountain Brook, or already settled into a Homewood weekend, this self-guided driving tour invites you to explore the historic wards that shaped this Shades Valley community. Created by the Homewood Historic Preservation Commission, the tour traces a century of growth from rural farmland and streetcar villages into the vibrant, tree-lined city of Homewood, Alabama. This is a flexible driving tour with no single fixed route. Pick up the story at any of Homewood's five historic wards and travel in whichever order suits you: Rosedale, West Homewood, Edgewood, the Lakeshore, Mayfair and Windsor area, and Hollywood. Along the way you'll travel streets and roads including 18th Street South, Montgomery Highway, Green Springs Highway, Oxmoor Road, Broadway, Saulter Road, Lakeshore Parkway, and Hollywood Boulevard, each tied to a chapter of the city's development.
