The Power of Sports in Birmingham

Sports have long been part of Birmingham’s story. As home to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), a central hub in the famed state-wide Robert Trent Jones Golf Course, and the steward of historic Rickwood Field, the nation’s oldest professional ballpark, our community understands the power of sports to bring people together and create unforgettable moments. Today, that legacy continues to grow, earning Birmingham recognition as one of Sports Business Journal’s Top 40 Sports Business Cities.

World-Renowned Golf

With 140,000 yards of some of the best public golf on earth and a Southern climate, Birmingham is a near-year-round perfect place to play. From award-winning Robert Trent Jones at Ross Bridge to Highland Park in the heart of downtown, you’re sure to find a course that fits your mood, and your handicap, see here for a guide.

468 holes statewide, Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is the largest golf course construction project ever attempted. Birmingham features Ross Bridge and Oxmoor Valley.

Ross Bridge is one of the longest U.S. courses at 8,191 yard, with scenic waterfalls and lakeside holes. You can stay at the nearby Renaissance Birmingham Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa. Oxmoor Valley sits near Ross Bridge with 54 holes. Sculpted from the peaks and valleys of the Appalachians, the courses offer scenic forests, numerous creeks, and challenging elevation changes.

“The National Senior Games Association is pleased to continue our partnership with Birmingham as we look ahead to the 2029 National Senior Games presented by Humana. Birmingham holds a special place in our history, having hosted The Games successfully in 2017. The energy, hospitality and commitment from the Birmingham community made a lasting impression on our organization and, most importantly, on our athletes. We look forward to returning and building on that strong partnership to create another memorable experience for our athletes, families, volunteers and community.”
