The Birmingham 2025 World Police & Fire Games Host Committee is excited to announce Regions Bank as the official sponsor of its Volunteer Program. Known as “The Games of Heroes,” the event will take place from June 27 to July 6, 2025, in Birmingham, Alabama. Registration for the Regions Bank Volunteer Program opened on February 5, 2025.
WPFG will host over 8,500 first responders from around the world competing in more than 60 athletic events at premier venues across the city. Birmingham takes pride in being one of the distinguished cities worldwide to be awarded the Games. More than 2,500 volunteers are needed to support WPFG.
“This summer, we have an incredible opportunity to recognize the courage and skills of public safety professionals from around the world. Birmingham has a wonderful chance to shine on a global stage as we welcome visitors and showcase everything our community has to offer,” says Christian White, Birmingham Market Executive at Regions Bank. “Regions Bank is proud to support this exceptional competition among top public safety athletes and the volunteer program. We’re excited to share our hometown with more and more people who are discovering the wonders of Birmingham.”
Volunteer roles include athlete registration, sports logistics, competition support, results entry, medal distribution, and special events. Individual volunteers must be at least 16 years old by June 1, 2025, and are responsible for their own transportation to the venues. Corporate volunteer teams are encouraged.
“Volunteering at the BHM 2025 World Police & Fire Games provides a unique opportunity to give back to our local heroes who serve every day, as well as to the global first responder community,” says DJ Mackovets, CEO of the Birmingham 2025 Host Committee. “We are grateful to Regions Bank for supporting our volunteer program. They share our enthusiasm for offering volunteers a chance to be part of something greater. This inspiring event celebrates courage, camaraderie, and competition. Whether you support athletes, assist with logistics, or engage with the community, your contribution makes a lasting impact. We invite all residents of the Greater Birmingham area and beyond to join us. Volunteers are the backbone of our success.”
Since its inaugural event in 1985, WPFG has grown into one of the world’s most significant athletic events for first responders, drawing thousands of athletes from over 70 countries. The first World Police & Fire Games were held in 1985 in San Jose, California. The World Police & Fire Games aim to offer the same variety of sports, & the same high caliber of venues, officials, & athletic achievement as the original California Police Games, but on a global scale. Since then, WPFG has been hosted several times in the United States & different countries, including Australia, Canada, China, Northern Ireland, Spain, & Sweden. Participants compete in various sports, including traditional events like basketball, weightlifting, and soccer, as well as cycling and first-responder- specific challenges like the Police Pistol Combat, Toughest Competitor Alive, and Ultimate Firefighter.
The games are open to current and retired public safety personnel from law enforcement, fire services, customs, and corrections, including 9-1-1 dispatchers, crime scene investigators, and lifeguards in good standing.
