Birmingham, AL – The South Eastern Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® has selected Birmingham, Alabama, as the host city for the 94th South Eastern Regional Conference, taking place April 29 to May 2, 2026, at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC).
The conference is expected to attract more than 6,000 visitors from Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama and generate an estimated $10 million economic impact, supporting Birmingham’s hospitality industry through hotel stays, dining, transportation, and retail spending. The influx of visitors is expected to create significant activity throughout downtown Birmingham, particularly in the area surrounding the BJCC.
According to South Eastern Regional Director Tracey Morant Adams, Ph.D., the conference is designed to serve registrants and the greater community. “Our primary purpose is to conduct the business of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; however, we also aim to meaningfully give back to the community that welcomes us,” said Adams.
Attendees will participate in business meetings, workshops and various events designed to inform, educate and complement their membership in the 118-year-old sorority. In keeping with a longstanding commitment to community service, Alpha Kappa Alpha members will conduct several impactful service initiatives to benefit the Greater Birmingham area, including planting 27 trees at Ensley Park in partnership with Cool Green Trees and bringing nonperishable food to the conference for local families as part of the sorority’s Childhood Hunger Power Pack (CHIPP™) program.
“Our tradition is to identify local nonprofit organizations and initiatives that align with our sorority’s mission of service,’’ said Adams, who will conclude her final term as director of the South Eastern Region this year. “We look forward to engaging directly with the Birmingham community.”
Tammy Fincher, senior employer relations specialist at PNC Bank in Birmingham, serves as chair of the 94th South Eastern Regional Conference. The conference theme is “Soaring in Power, Experience the Magic!” Local Alpha Kappa Alpha members and Birmingham-based leaders have played a key role in planning and hosting the event.
“Birmingham is proud to welcome Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for the 94th South Eastern Regional Conference,” said Dan Williams, president and CEO of the Greater Birmingham Convention & Visitors Bureau. “This is more than a major meeting for us; it’s an opportunity to host an organization with a powerful legacy of leadership, service, and impact. Events like this not only generate meaningful economic impact, but they also bring influential leaders and change makers into our community. We look forward to showcasing our vibrant downtown and hospitality community while delivering an experience that reflects the sorority’s energy and excellence.”
Conference-related events will take place throughout downtown Birmingham. As part of the conference, the community is invited to attend a free public meeting featuring keynote speaker Stacey Abrams on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. The event is open to the public and will celebrate civic leadership and community impact. Abrams’ participation further underscores Birmingham’s role as a host city for nationally significant gatherings that convene influential leaders and changemakers from across the region
